Twin Fawns

Summer officially arrived on the 22nd of June about 2 AM. The next day, 2 very lively fawns showed up in my backyard. They are tiny and cute and spirited as all get out. As typical for blogger, right now, it will not let post pictures...so you are going to have to imagine what they are like. Lucky for me, you've all seen fawns before and these 2 are typical but with more energy than most. Right now I have the pleasure of watching them grow up this summer. I'm sure other fawns will show up. I know they are hiding in the forest and it's just a matter of time.

Yesterday, I was sitting on my screened porch enjoying the scene. Picture, if you will, a mama doe with 2 youngsters. Mama's job this summer is to teach these 2 little guys to be deer. Mama is doing everything in her power to teach them and they are NOT paying any attention to her. Instead they are racing around in circles. One going in one direction the other going in the other. She stamps her foot, which is a pretty "loud" command for mama to do, and they pay her no heed. She stands between them trying to stop their antics and they continue to jump and bounce and run. I can see the exasperation on her face as she has her mouth open. I've been watching deer in the backyard for a long time, and I've never seen a mama deer open her mouth as if to say "stop it!" The little ones just bounce and jump. This pair of fawns love to race in circles and they race around her.

They put on a show for 2 hours yesterday and I'm wondering where they are getting all the energy. I'm getting tired looking at them running around. They did stop a couple of times to feed and mama let them, so they are still nursing, but then right back to their antics of running at top speed around my imaginary race course. They are just too much fun to watch.

One of my joys every summer is to watch the deer. We have a small herd (maybe 10 or so) and each deer is different from the others. I know most of them on site though none of them have names. I don't feed them either as I don't want them to become dependent on me as I'm not a full time resident. They have "nests" where they sleep at night, favorite places to hang out during the day, as well as favorite times to appear and disappear from the forest. You can see the path they have made from the forest to the backyard but I never go on their path...I want that to remain their path.

For now, summer has really started. I get to see "my" deer and enjoy the antics of the fawns. It does not get any better than that. Remember, we're all in this together.
