It's good to travel. It's good to be home. Both of those are true statements. As you know, we love to travel and we like our homes too. To that end, more travel is planned but for the near future we'll be in Geezerville.
The Tennessee River Cruise was a lot of fun. We saw some great places along the way; met some wonderful folks on the boat and we ate a lot of fine meals. The cruise ended and we rented a car to visit old friends outside of Knoxville, TN. Renting the car was not fun. I accidentally rented a car for Charlotte and we were in Chattanooga...both cities start with CHA. I typed CHA and found a car but it was the wrong CHA. When I got to Chattanooga airport and asked for my car the nice folks said "we have your car at the other CHA airport in Charlotte and we have nothing here to rent." What was I going to do? I went to the other car rental agencies and found there were a few cars available so I rented one of them. The fellow at the counter said a lot of folks make the same mistake. We ended up with a sporty little Hyundai that almost fit us--I usually drive an SUV or a pickup truck and this was a low-slung sedan. We drove it to Knoxville and it worked. I won't make that mistake again!
We spent 4 days with our friends, talking and eating...I'm tempted to call this vacation the "TN River and Eat Good Food Cruise" as everywhere we went we were fed well. It was 8 years since our last visit, so we had a lot of catching up to do (even though we talk to each other all the time).
The next big hurdle was flying back home. Our flight left Knoxville at 6:00 AM meaning we had to get up at 2:30, dress, pack, and drive to the airport (we had turned in the rental car earlier). We got on the plane and arrived in DFW early...but getting around DFW is hard. We had a wheelchair guide who knew the airport well and took us from our gate in A terminal to our gate in E terminal in record time. We waited at the gate long enough to eat a quick lunch (we did not eat breakfast) when we boarded our flight home. The flight home to SGU was easy. I picked up our car and we went to a favorite restaurant for our first real meal of the day. The drive home was easy but we were tired. We unpacked the car and crashed. I think I slept 4 more hours.
The trip was great. The highlights were many but seeing old friends tops the list. Visiting Nashville was interesting and fun as I know nothing about the huge music scene it is. Along the way we learned a lot of history about the area and the Civil War. The old Civil War battlefields are still there, only today they are green parklands that cover up the horrible battles that were fought there. (One guide said if you listen carefully you might hear the haunting sounds of battle. We never seem to learn do we?) Other highlights were the Helen Keller Birthplace in a tiny Alabama town of Tuscumbia and the train museum and train ride in Chattanooga. The Land Between the Lakes was beautiful and I have to mention our cabin on the ship was outstanding.
But, now we are back in reality. I've already done 3 loads of laundry and there are a couple of more to do. We bought groceries yesterday but we need a few more supplies as we've not been in Geezerville for a few months. We have the proverbial doctors to see to make sure all the "glue" that is used to keep us together is still working. As Stephanie Plum in the Janet Evanovich books says "things to do, places to see" is on the agenda for a few more days. It's all good. Remember, we're all in this together.
